A corruption investigation involving a high-ranking Bahamian police officer has reached South Florida. This followed a shooting incident on Monday, where a whistleblower named Sylvens Metayer was shot while livestreaming from his apartment in Hollywood.
During the livestream, bullets hit a window, and Metayer fell to the ground, saying, “Hey, I got shot,” and later mentioning he was shot in the face and foot. Blood was visible on his shirt, and a child could be heard crying in the background. A woman was also calling 911 for help.
Metayer’s Facebook page is known for discussing conspiracy theories and allegations of police corruption in the Bahamas. Recently, he shared voice recordings that seemed to show a police chief negotiating bribes with a wanted criminal, causing significant fallout in the Royal Bahamas Police Force. As a result, the police chief has been placed on leave.
The shooting happened about an hour into Metayer’s livestream, shortly after the Bahamas Police Commissioner announced an investigation into the recordings. U.S. and U.K. law enforcement agencies are helping with the inquiry.
Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davies, who was in Miami for a telecommunications conference, emphasized that the allegations are taken seriously. He mentioned that the police commissioner quickly suspended the officer in question and started a thorough investigation, with plans for international support.
On Wednesday, Hollywood police confirmed they responded to the shooting but did not name the victim. They reported that Metayer was taken to the hospital for treatment and that detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
